What is mindful knitting?
Mindful knitting is about more than feeling calm with yarn and needles. It’s a way to bringing intentional awareness internally to our bodies and minds as we knit, and externally to the materials, beings, and processes that make our knitting possible.
Mindful Knitting is a way to enhance our reverence for the objects we crate by honoring all the effort, time, wisdom, and lifeforms woven into our knitting fabrics.
Mindful knitting is an intentional approach to fibercraft that invites us to expand our awareness of our materials, our making process, and the way we care for the objects we produce. By knitting mindfully, we can create a physical expression of our interbeing nature. Inviting our mindfulness practice into our knitting can help to expand our awareness of the plants, animals, people, and landscapes interwoven in our craft. Through this intentional practice, we are invited to make in such a way that does no harm to people, cultures, and environments. Knitting mindfully, we increase our capacity for understanding, joy, and compassion while cultivating our inner well of peace, solidity, and creativity.
Mindful Knitting Circle FAQ
What knitting skill do I need?
Basic! If you can knit, purl, cast-on, and cast-off - you’re in great shape. And honestly, purling is optional.
What if I don’t have experience with mindfulness?
These circles are welcoming of all levels of practice from first-timers to experienced meditation practitioner. The entire thing will be gently guided and all practices are offered as an invitation.
What should I bring?
Needles and yarn of your choice. Any gauge and material is fine! Bring enough for a small gauge swatch. (And we’ll have some extra needles and yarn in case you don’t have any or forget).
What should I expect at the circle?
Each circle will include participant introductions, a brief intro to mindful knitting, a short guided mindfulness practice, a period of mindful knitting, a chance to share your experience with the group - and some tea!
